1. e4 c5 2. Nc3 Nc6 3. g3 g6 4. Bg2 Bg7 5. d3 d6 6. f4 e5 7. Nh3 Nge7 8. O-O Rb8?!

8... O-O 9. f5 gxf5 10. exf5 Bxf5 11. Rxf5! Nxf5 12. Qh5 Is the reason Black doesn't castle right away, White gets a strong attack on light squares for the sacrificed exchange.

8... Nd4 9. f5 gxf5 10. Qh5 h6 11. Rf2 Be6 12. Be3 Ng8 13. Bxd4 Nf6 14. Qe2 cxd4 15. exf5 Bd7 16. Ne4 Bc6 17. Re1 Nxe4 18. Bxe4 Bf6 1-0 Starostits,I-Nataf,I/Pardubice 2002 (45)

9. a3?!

9. f5 f6 10. Ng5!? (10. Nf2) 10... O-O 11. Ne6

9... Nd4

9... O-O 10. f5 gxf5 11. Qh5 (11. exf5 Bxf5 should be relatively safe for Black but I was adamant about not allowing such sacrifices having seen games where White took over light squares and brewed up a strong attack, therefore I delayed castling. ) 11... Nd4 12. Ng5 h6 13. Nf3 Nxc2 14. Bxh6

10. Be3 Bd7?!

10... O-O 11. f5 gxf5 12. Qh5 Nxc2

10... f6?! 11. fxe5 dxe5 12. Na4! b6 13. c3 Ne6 14. b4

10... O-O

11. Qd2?

White is putting all his eggs in one basket and its the wrong one.

I was concerned about 11. fxe5 dxe5 12. Bg5 O-O (12... h6 13. Bxe7 Qxe7 14. Nd5 Qd6) 13. Nd5= (13. Bf6? Bxf6 14. Rxf6 Nef5 15. Nd5 Ne3!)

One of ideas behind Bd7 is that now 11. b4 isnt good due to 11... cxb4 12. axb4 Qc8

11... f6!

Here my opponent must have burned close to 30 minutes, he simply did not know what to do, all his plans are cut off.

12. f5 gxf5 13. Bh6?! O-O 14. Bxg7 Kxg7

Black's monarch is actually quite safe here.

15. Nf2 Bc6

I was thinking about playing Kh8, perhaps it would have been prudent. 15... Kh8!?

16. Nfd1 d5

16... Qb6

17. exf5 Nexf5

17... Ndxf5 seemed more precise in calculating some variations but I just couldnt overpower myself.

18. Bh3 Ne7 19. Ne3 f5 20. Ng2?! Ng6

20... e4? 21. Nh4 (21. Nf4 Nf3+?? 22. Rxf3 exf3 23. Ne6+)

20... Qd6

21. Ne2 Bd7?!

21... Nxe2+ 22. Qxe2 Qg5 23. Qf2 looking at this position I stopped calculating assuming I am losing back a pawn but.... 23... d4! (23... f4) 24. Bxf5 Bxg2! 25. Kxg2 (25. h4 Rxf5) 25... Rxf5 (25... Nh4+) 26. Qxf5 Nh4+

22. Nxd4 cxd4 23. Rf2 Qb6! 24. Raf1 Qxb2?

24... e4! This move escaped my attention simply because I was looking to play it on move 23... when my Queen was on d8 and Bishop on d7 when of course it doesn't work due to d4 hanging. Apparantly, I still thought it wasn't possible.

25. Qg5 Qxa3

25... h6!? 26. Qh5 Qxa3 27. Nh4! Nxh4 28. gxh4

26. Bxf5 Bxf5 27. Nh4!!

An excellent and quite unexpected move, I must admit I was quite jolted.

27. Rxf5 h6! (27... Rxf5?! 28. Rxf5! Qd6 (28... Qe7 29. Qxe7+ Nxe7 30. Rxe5 Kf6 31. Rh5) ) 28. Qg4 Rxf5 29. Qxf5 Qe7 Is what I expected

27... Bh3 28. Nxg6

28. Rf6 Rxf6 (28... Qa6!? 29. Nf5+ Kh8 30. Rxa6 bxa6 31. g4 Bxf1 32. Kxf1 a5 with a completely irrational positon, this is a purely computer line and I dont even have any faith in the computer.) 29. Qxf6+ Kh6 (29... Kg8?? 30. Nxg6 hxg6 31. Qxg6+ Kh8 32. Qh6+ Kg8 33. Qg5+ Kh8 34. Qxe5+ Kh7 (34... Kg8 35. Qxb8+) 35. Rf7+) 30. Nxg6 hxg6 31. Qh4+ Kg7 32. Qf6+ Kh7! 33. Qh4+ Kg8 34. Qxh3 Qd6 goes into the same line as in comments to move 29 but down 2 tempos for both sides.

28... hxg6 29. Qxe5+

29. Rf6 Rxf6 30. Qxf6+ (30. Rxf6 Qa1+ 31. Rf1 Qxf1#) 30... Kh7 31. Qh4+ Kg8 32. Qxh3 Qd6

29... Kh6?

Allows a draw but the alternative seemed risky

29... Kg8 30. Qg5 Qa6! 31. Rxf8+ (31. Rf6? Rxf6 32. Rxf6 Qa1+ 33. Kf2 Qf1# Is the point behind Qa6!, Queen eyes white's back rank.) 31... Rxf8 32. Rxf8+ Kxf8 33. Qh6+ Kg8 34. Qxh3

30. Qxd4??

I couldnt believe it

White misses a simple 30. Rf4 Rxf4 31. Qxf4+ Kg7 32. Qc7+ (32. Qxd4+) 32... Kh6 33. Qf4+= leads to a draw

30... Qe7!!

Now its over!

30... Bf5? 31. g4

31. Rxf8 Rxf8

and seing that Rxf8 Qe1+ leads to mate, white resigned.

0-1
